This was truly a custom job for a client that has special needs. The client was paralyzed while overseas in the military. Truly a hero, we were happy to help him. Since he was paralyzed he needed an elevator so he could get up and down from the basement to the third-floor of his home. We worked with a company who specializes in installing elevators, and they asked us to put in an area way outside that would serve as the foundation and the basement entrance for the elevator. So we dug down almost 10 feet because the elevator has to have a pit in the bottom of it and it was a basement that was fully underground. After excavation, we formed and poured our footings and then formed and poured our walls, the exact size specified for the elevator shaft. After that we installed a drain tile around the new walls and applied tar to seal them. In the elevator shaft pit we installed a sump pump to reject any water that may get in it and then poured a slab for the bottom of the elevator shaft. We truly had fun with this one, considering it was very different than our normal Egress Windows or even a walkout for a basement with stairs, but still an Egress all the same, just with an elevator in it. Feel free to call JDS Home Improvement, the Maryland egress specialists anytime if you need an egress window, a walkout or sunken patio in your basement, or even an elevator. We will be glad to help you.
